How it works

Your phone logs the night.

  1. NightSTEP 1

    Sleep somewhere

If tracking stays is enabled, the phone can tell when your vehicle hasn’t moved all night and logs the stay by itself. No check-in. The GPS trail stays on the phone. What gets sent is the spot it matched and the hours you were there.

  2. VanSTEP 2

    Answer one question

In the morning it asks how it went: Good, Meh, Got knocked, or Ticket. That’s where the reliability, risk and crowding numbers come from.

  3. PrivacySTEP 3

    Log three nights

After three logged stays you get exact pins and a ranked list for tonight. Lots where people have been logging a lot of stays drop down the list.

Reliability legend: avoid to just worksSame colour scale on pins, hexes and gauges, from red (avoid) to green (just works).

What the server gets

The database stores as little about where you sleep as it can. Here's what it keeps.

  • Privacy

No GPS tracks on the server

The phone figures out that you stayed. All it sends is a spot id and the hour you arrived and the hour you left.

  • Privacy

Your stay records are deleted after 30 days

The spot stays on the map for good. After 30 days the record of who slept there is gone and all that’s kept is a vehicle count per spot per night, with no user ids.

  • Privacy

    Enforcement reports don't name anyone

A report says a lot got checked on a given night. Your id comes off the report after 7 days.

  • Privacy

    This site only shows areas

Each hex is about a quarter square mile and only appears once 3+ people have stayed in it. Exact spots are in the app once you’ve logged three stays yourself.
